Activity Report for the period
June 9, 2000 - July 13, 2000

During this period, there was 1 dive monitoring trip performed at the Von Rosenberg Reef in FH-7. Comparison observations were made between this newly placed reef and nearby more seasoned structure.

This reef was sunk on May 13, 2000 whereas the comparison reefs of the Jumbo Barge and the Rowan Crew Quarters were sunk in 1986 and 1993 respectively. On June 3, an attempt was made to get some early observations, but was not successful due to poor visibility. This trip was performed on June 24 and was successful.

Observations revealed the vessel landed somewhat inverted, but the superstructure did keep the hull from achieving a full 180° turtle. She is resting at an estimated 140° which leaves an overhang that looks attractive for grouper. Blow holes were noted on the hull bottom and some measurements were taken at that location for later comparisons. The surrounding depth was 130 feet with a minimum depth of 100 feet recorded.

While not a great abundance of game fish were observed, many juveniles as well as bait fish covered the wreck. Most Red Snapper and Grouper were under 12 inches which contrasted with the nearby Rowan and Jumbo Barge reefs. Many of the Red Snapper and Grouper on those older structures were over 15 pounds each (14-18 Count). Also Amberjack on the Von Rosenberg were around 24 inches in length whereas on the older reefs most were a bit over the legal length of 37 inches. Large schools of cigar minnows were also noted on the new reef. It was evident from the observations that the new reef is doing an excellent job of recruiting juvenile fish which should lead to larger game fish in the future.

Kirk Loy and crew with ETV of Jackson obtained some useable video footage of the reefs to aide him with a story he is working on about the reefs. MGFB's video camera was also used to obtain useable footage and the tape was loaned to Mr. Loy. He indicated he will be giving MGFB notice when he knows of the air time.
