Activity Report for the Period
July 13 - August 9, 2001

Trip Summary

During this period, there was one trip made to deposit inshore concrete rubble at the Horn Island Middle Ground Site FH-10 followed by a dive on the Bill Walker wreck in FH-2.

Rubble Deployment
Rubble deployments were conducted by T&W Marine and PRIMOFISH.COM at the Horn Island Middle Gound Site FH-10. This deployment completes the Tidelands Fund fiscal year projects for MGFB. Surrounding water depth was 12 feet with a minimum depth of 10 feet recorded. The DGPS was recording 11 satellites, had a hoop of 1.2 and an estimated accuracy of 9 feet. The material was deployed around 2PM in the southeast corner of FH-10 at the following coordinates:

  ID         DATE             LAT/LON                        LORAN                               Remarks
=====    =====     ===============   ===================    ========================
249F10   010718   30°15.886/88°38.914   12382.3/47085.1/29601.3     Scattered Southeast Corner FH-10.

Dive & Video Survey
Following the Rubble Deployment, a trip was made to FH-2 to conduct some Video and observations. The hypoxic condition noted last month in FH-13 was showing evidence here as well. Several of the low profile rubble fields were void of fish. In order to evaluate a higher profile reef, a dive was made on the Bill Walker wreck which resides in about 55' of water at 30°05.243' N/88°33.155' W. Visibility was very limited at the bottom, but 3 red snapper were seen. There was a multitude of red snapper (200-250) in the mid-water at 35'-40' of water depth. Most were juvenile fish estimated at about 13-15 inches in length. A couple were of keeper size (16 inches) and a few mangrove snapper were in the mix. There were no other fish sightings. This school of snapper seemed to mimic the usual schools of spade fish seen on these structures and freely ascended close to the surface. Interestingly, no spade fish were spotted on this dive.
