Summary of Trips
During this period, there were 4 inshore and 1 offshore construction trips performed. A concrete skimmer barge was sunk in FH-1 on August 13, 1998 (ID=212F1). Approximately 500 cubic yards of #57 Limestone were deposited east of Long Beach Harbor (ID=213LBH) on August 14. Approximately 500 cubic yards of concrete rubble was placed off the Waveland Pier on August 18 (ID=214WAV). Approximately 500 cubic yards of concrete rubble was placed at the Deer Island site on August 20 (ID=215DI) and another 500 cubic yards on August 23, 1998 (ID=216DI). This is the 2nd report for FY99 working under DMR permit DMR-98330-W.
980813 Callon Skimmer Barge (ID=212F1)
LAT: 30°03.765' N LORAN: 12404.7 29574.2
LONG: 88°36.757' W 47037.9
This 55'X55'X13' concrete skimmer barge was donated by Callon Petroleum Company. The barge was coming from Louisiana thru the ICW so FH-1 was chosen as an appropriate site to minimize travel and still have some adequate water clearance. The spotter boat "primofish.com" arrived onsite at 1:35PM for an expected 2PM rendevous. The Tug "Miss Donna" arrived with the cargo at 3:45PM. Four Pumps began to pump the barge with water starting at 4PM and finally with some assistance by the Tug pulling the listing end of the barge and throwing prop wash into her, she sunk at 6:05PM. A surrounding depth of 61.5' was read, tides were at 0.7' as of 3:45PM with High Tide of 1.4' at 4:53AM and Low Tide of 0.6' at 2:36PM. Minimum depth read was 48 feet.
980814 Long Beach Harbor Limestone (ID=213LBH)
LAT: 30°20.592' N LORAN: 12080.5 29326.0-1
LONG: 89°07.872' W 47095.3-4
Approximately 500 cubic yards of #57 Limestone rocks at this site on August 14, 1998. Spotter boat "primofish.com" met the Tug "Big Mike" of Borries Construction and began unloading at 9:40AM. A surrounding depth reading of 7.5'-8.0' was made and a minimum depth of 5.1 feet. Three times the barge was spudded down and limestone was deposited at a radius of about 50 feet while slowly turning around the spud. The 3 spud locations are as follows, and a good "hit" was recorded at the coordinates above.
SPUD1: 30°20.609'N SPUD2: 30°20.582' N SPUD3: 30°20.637' N
89°07.876'W 89°07.914'W 88°07.947'W
980818 Waveland Pier Rubble (ID=214wav)
LAT: 30°16.88' N
LONG: 89°21.88' W
Approximately 500 cubic yards of concrete rubble was deposited at this site on August 18, 1998. This trip met with early problems as the spotter boat "primofish.com" lost the lower unit gears of her engine at about 11AM while in route for the 12PM rendevous. Toni King of King Marine Services was called to assist and the new spotter boat finally arrived onsite at 2:30PM. Unloading began at 2:40PM and finished at 4:30PM. The rubble was scattered mainly between the above coordinates and the southeast corner of the pier. Surrounding depth was 6-7 feet. Minimum Depth was read at 5 feet. Neither Differential GPS nor LORAN was available due to the equipment problems of the first spotter boat.
980820 Deer Island rubble #1 (ID=215DI)
LAT: 30°21.780' N 30°21.788' N
LONG: 88°52.927' W 88°52.942' W
Approximately 500 cubic yards of concrete rubble was deposited at the southeast corner of this site on August 20, 1998. Spotter boat "The Other Woman II" arrived onsite at 9:20AM. The Tug "Big Mike" arrived and began off loading at 10:50AM. There is a piling marking an existing wreck near this location. The wreck was marked at LAT 30°21.772'N and LONG 88°52.906'W. The piling is immediately on the west end of the wreck. The rubble was deposited immediately North and West of the piling with 2 good "hits" being recorded at the above coordinates. Surrounding depth read 10.6 feet with a minimum depth of 8.7 feet. The spotter boat was using a Garmin GPSMAP 210 with a GBR21 Differential receiver. EPE was 47 feet and DOP was 1.4. Seven of 8 satellites were being tracked.
980823 Deer Island Rubble #2 (id=216DI)
LAT: 30°21.846' N 30°21.857' N
LONG: 88°52.916' W 88°52.924' W
Approximately 500 cubic yards of concrete rubble was deposited at the southeast corner of this site on August 23, 1998. Spotter boat "The Other Woman II" arrived onsite at 8:55AM. The Tug "Big Mike" arrived and began off loading at 9:10AM. Unloading was completed at 11:30AM. The rubble was deposited immediately North of the first load with 2 good "hits" being recorded at the above coordinates. Surrounding depth read 11 feet with a minimum depth of 9.1 feet. The spotter boat was using a Garmin GPSMAP 210 with a GBR21 Differential receiver. EPE was 53 feet and DOP was 1.4. Six of 8 satellites were being tracked.

Explanation of Identification Terms
In the early stages of reef development, material was merely identified with its site and a letter designation for barges and a number designation for rubble. For example, there was FH-1 Barge E and FH-2 Rubble 6. As more material gets placed and more sites become developed, there arises a need to better identify the material to avoid confusion and perhaps yield some more information about the material. Two methods of identification will be used.
An absolute ID was started a couple years back when it was desired to develop a database of material placed. Each target was assigned a number followed by the site identification. The list was made as chronological as possible so that lower numbers mean older targets. The site ID is added to give an idea as to the location of the target. For example, the Ladnier Barge mentioned above has an ID of 205F13. The number 205 is enough to identify this material and it is approximately the 205th target placed on the bottom. We also know it is in Fish Haven 13. However, there is some merit to knowing the date the material is placed.
Last year a standard was implemented of assigning the deposit date to the beginning of the rubble. For example 6-27-97 ANG Rubble. This idea is being expanded upon by changing the format to YYMMDD and eliminating the hyphens thereby facilitating a more chronological and efficient listing of the material. For example 970627 ANG Rubble. In this and future reports, efforts will be made to use both identification schemes.
