Trip Summary
During this period, one trip was made on January 12, 1999 to FH-13 to evaluate conditions of concrete rubble since hurricane Georges. The findings were that this material faired much better than the barges that had been observed.
960828 Rubble #1 (ID=165F13)
This Rubble pile was sunk on August 28, 1996 utilizing Tidelands funds at Latitude 30°02.090' and Longitude 88°31.960'. The Loran Coordinates are 12453.5, 47031.3. The surrounding depth is 74' with a fairly concentrated 2'-3' relief of rubble. Visibility was only about 5 feet at the bottom and was so poor through the water column that lighting was very low making the dive seem almost like a night dive. Even with the poor visibility, an abundance of red snapper (175-200) and gag grouper (15-20) were observed. Sizes ranged from 2 to 25 pounds on the snapper and 5-20 pounds on the grouper. Storm damage was not as apparent on this material, compared to the nearby barge observations, although there were much fewer sightings of sea anemones, arrow crabs, and invertebrates than were made on this same material this past July. Over sedimentation was not observed and material relief above the bottom was still satisfactory. Finger Corals were still thriving on this material, unlike what was observed at the ladnier barge. An octopus (about 3 lbs. In size) was also sighted on the dive. Some of the captured video images are shown below.
